In America, Latino and other immigrants fail in public schools because they do not understand English. On “Global Voices: Rain in a Dry Land”, a Somali refugee to the echoes the cry of non-English speakers who can not navigate the systems so they improve their lives to educate themselves, their children, and improve their economic status: “It’s impossible because of the language.” On IES, all educational skills’ exercises are in all languages because all languages are of equal value. Therefore, because “...children learn in their own language first”, they are not forced to abandon their culture to get an education. According to Dr. Joy DeGruy, when children lose their culture, they lose “that intrinsic sense of self.” Moreover, Harvard Professor, Fernando Reimers, informs us that populations benefit when citizens have the “ability to speak foreign languages at an advanced level.”
