My Story:
My career in journalism was sparked by a high school English teacher who advised the school newspaper and was a liaison to a community newspaper that published columns written by students about their high schools. The impact of journalism education in my life, as with many others, was crucial. After serving as a journalist and now in journalism education, my goal is to broaden and strengthen the reach of scholastic journalism.
My Ideal School is a Place Where:
Students have access to teachers, teachers have the latitude to practice their profession without hindrance, class sizes are small, facilities are in repair and contemporary, equipment/technology is state-of-the art, support staff are appropriate and in appropriate numbers, principals and administrators are excellent staff managers who realize their role as facilitators working to assure teachers and students are successful. There are enough resources to support students activities at levels to meet student demand.
My Religious Views:
We're all God's children.
My Political Views:
Humans first, quality of life second, money third
My Favorite Freedom:
Free speech

Too many books to list here, I have such a deep interest in reading. My favorite novelist is J. California Cooper. I'm reading Loving Frank now, historical fiction, and it's a page turner!

Hi Vanessa, and welcome to the Five Freedoms Network. It's great to have you here -- how did you hear about us?

I'm looking forward to checking out J. California Cooper. I decided to start with Life Is Short, but Wide - it looks great!

You may be interested in joining the Center for Scholastic Journalism Group here on the Network. You can check it out here. Given your wonderful description of your ideal school, you may also find the Rethink Learning Now Partners Group of interest.

As you can see from the world map on our home page, we have a growing, eclectic community of individuals from across the globe -- from Brooklyn to Pakistan, from North Dakota to China. Thank you for taking the time to add your voice to that fascinating mix.

As you surf around the Network and its companion site, www.fivefreedoms.org, I urge you to share your voice throughout. Take our You Be The Judge First Amendment quiz (a new scenario every two weeks). Leave a comment on a fellow member's personal page and make a new contact. Upload a video to our gallery, or watch and react to one already there. Join (or start) a group or visit the Soapbox to contribute to (or start) a discussion. And invite others to join us.

In short, use your voice to co-create our online community :-)

You may also be interested in taking a look at our companion site - the Five Freedoms Project. The section on "What We Value" includes a variety of resources about the five freedoms of the First Amendment, our leadership framework, student voice, and impact factors.

Post a comment on my page anytime with questions or ideas. Thanks again!
