First Name:
Myron
Last Name:
Brumaghim
Hometown:
Honolulu
School/Organization Name:
Nanaikapono Elementary School
Job Title:
Retired Principal

Waianae
State:
Hawaii
My Story:
As a retired principal of a Nanaikapono Elementary school, my focus was to provide the best educational environment for our students. Realizing that our school will never have sufficient funds and other resources, our staff was able to develop a partnership with the University of Hawaii, College of Education. This partnership has done wonders in helping our teachers and me develop an exciting educaitonal environment for our students. Currently, we are creating a partnership with the NFL Youth Education Town Center (Boys and Girls Club) to broaden the educational opportunities for our students in the area (i.e. art, music and ect.)
My Ideal School is a Place Where:
I believe that our students have the fundamental right to live successful lives through the maximization of their educaitonal experience. Therefore, my vision of an ideal school is one in which students have a voice, they are engaged in learning, they want to be here, and it is a safe, exciting place.
My Religious Views:
Since Nanaikapono Elementary School is located in the largest Hawaiian Homelands in Hawaii, it is important that we practice and sustain cultural beliefs and practices- a right has been denied Native Hawaiians for centuries.
My Favorite Freedom:
Freedom to petition, because goals of our current national legislation (NCLB) is not realistic and the consequences are devastating on our schools and students.
My Personal Heroes:
My personal hero is mom, who contributed a bunch to what I have become.
My Personal Motto:
Always have the students interest (For our Keiki) foremost in your mind and one size does not fit all.
My Favorite Journey:
My favorate journey started 19 years ago and continues.

Hi Myron! Glad to hear you made it back okay - and that you're already moving the work forward :-) When you get a chance, I'd love to hear your thoughts about the Five Things You Can Do in Voice (on the Project website). There are some community building and organizing resources there that I think may be valuable for your community work.
I'm looking forward to continuing our collaboration virtually!
Fondly,
Kim

Elden and I are fascinated with the kinds of protocols that are available in creating focus and organization to schools. In Hawaii, we have been using Facilitative Learnership (FL) for many, many years. Now, we have others tools. What a deal!!!

Yesterday, I learned that you do not should be cognizant of how you can thread religion into the curriculum in your school. Many times our schools have avoided the issue because of the fear of lawsuits. Therefore, yesterdays "learnings" helped me understand the "how to".

Today's work session was very thought provoking, as it adds more elements to consider in making better decisions for our students, families and communities that we serve.

Thanks Myron! That's an issue we'll explore in much greater detail during the Academy. See you soon!

Myron! Welcome to the Network. It's good to see you here -- and to see a face to go with the name.

When you have time, I have two next steps for you: First, flesh out your profile more fully, so the other Fellows can learn something about you before we all convene in DC; and second, click on the "National Fellows Group" in the upper right corner of the screen, and then click on the "Join" option. This is the place where you can see who on the Network will in joining you in July. It will also be the primary way I communicate with you all prior to the conference, once everyone is signed in.

Post a comment on my page anytime if you have questions or ideas. And please poke around and see what the site has to offer. I see, for example, that Rob Williams, an elementary school teacher in California, has started a discussion in the National Fellows Group asking for advice about his pending move to a new elementary school. You may be uniquely suited to offer him some useful feedback.
