My Story:
I was a high school history teacher for 16 years (independent schools in and around New York City). Moved to SF in 1993 and couldn't get a teaching job. Went to get my PhD at UC Davis, volunteered with the SF Organizing Project for a few years to help launch a "small school" (debbie meier version not bill gates version) then decided that people didn't seem to know how to organize so helped start the SF Freedom School in which we teach the detailed and authentic history of the Southern Freedom Movement (inaccurately known as the civil rights movement) so people can "get ready to be ready" today for the next social movement.
My Ideal School is a Place Where:
people learn from each other; people help each other analyse each other's experiences; people get to ask questions and everyone helps them try to answer their questions; people learn that anyone can be a leader and that a leader is someone who knows what the problem is.

Hi Kathy, and welcome to the Five Freedoms Network. It's great to have you here -- how did you hear about us?

Myles Horton is my all time hero, so well met :-) I'm going to check out your web site as soon as I finish leaving you this welcome. I hope you'll find lots of opportunities to share your perspectives here on the Network, and I look forward to more conversations!

As you can see from the world map on our home page, we have a growing, eclectic community of individuals from across the globe -- from Brooklyn to Pakistan, from North Dakota to China. Thank you for taking the time to add your voice to that fascinating mix.

As you surf around the Network and its companion site, www.fivefreedoms.org, I urge you to share your voice throughout. Take our You Be The Judge First Amendment quiz (a new scenario every two weeks). Leave a comment on a fellow member's personal page and make a new contact. Upload a video to our gallery, or watch and react to one already there. Join (or start) a group or visit the Soapbox to contribute to (or start) a discussion. And invite others to join us.

In short, use your voice to co-create our online community :-)

You may also be interested in taking a look at our companion site - the or. The section on "What We Value" includes a variety of resources about the five freedoms of the First Amendment, our leadership framework, student voice, and impact factors.

Post a comment on my page anytime with questions or ideas. Thanks again!

Hi Kathy,
Yes, please! Let me know next time you're heading for NH - I'm frequently up in the Concord area. And nope, I didn't grow up in Amherst, or in NH, but in Massachusetts. BTW, I really enjoyed your website and checking out your resources, and I'm looking forward to exploring the Freedom School Curriculum more in depth. Are you familiar with Harry Boyte's work? You might enjoy checking out the Public Achievement group here on the Network :-)

You need to be a member of The Five Freedoms Network to add comments!
