At the Schoolhouse Gate: Lessons in Intellectual Freedom
Be it grand or slender, burrowing, blasting, or refusing to sanctify, whether it laughs out loud or is a cry without an alphabet, the choice word or the chosen silence, unmolested language surges toward knowledge, not its destruction. But who does not know of literature that is banned because it is interrogative; discredited because it is critical; erased because alternative? And how many are outraged by the thought of a self-ravaged tongue?
. . . We die. That may be the meaning of life. But we do language. That may be the measure of our lives.
~Toni Morrison, Nobel lecture
Hi Gloria and welcome to The Five Freedoms Network!
It's good to have you here. Please take a look around the site to see what it has to offer -- and share your voice throughout. The Network is a flat hierarchy, so you have as much power as anyone to start new discussions or groups (or join existing ones), upload videos and photos, invite others, etc.
Feel free to post a comment on my page anytime with questions and ideas. And, the next time you're online, please upload a photo of yourself -- the easiest way to make a virtual network feel more personal is by seeing each other's faces (and profile answers).
I just learned that Heather Gillman, a high school student in rural northwest Florida, will receive the National Council of Teachers of English's Intellectual Freedom award at NCTE's fall conference in San Antonio. With support from the ACLU of Florida, Heather sued her school district in federal district court after her principal banned any expression of support for gay and lesbian students--and won.
You can read an account of the case at the web site of the Student Press Law Center: http://tinyurl.com/6j7g2w
Heather was nominated for the IF award by the Commission on Intellectual Freedom of the Florida Council of Teachers of English, which I co-chair.
