Gene, it is the Utah 3Rs Project -- "Rights, Responsibility, and Respect"... We started this about 18 years ago... Today, it is part of the state office of education. It focuses on religious liberty in public schools -- and how to teach about religions constitutionally... The 3Rs are the civic framework... the principles that flow from the First Amendment. There is also a statewide 3Rs Project in California. Hope all is well. Charles

Gene, I think you handled the situation extremely well. You did your homework... and knew that you faced a potentially dangerous situation. In my view, it would have been irresponsible to risk disruption or worse by allowing him to attend wearing the gang colors. But you gave him the option of attending -- offering a reasonable accommodation. And he choose not to accept it. Decisions like this are a balancing act -- tough calls... But I think you did what was in the best interest of all concerned. It is sad that he chose not to attend... but it would have been worse for his daughter (and everyone else) had he attended wearing the colors and a fight broke out. Charles

Gene! Welcome to the Five Freedoms Network. It's good to see you here -- and to have a face to go along with the name. I'm also a huge John Wooden fan, btw -- I coached varsity hoops when I was teaching in Brooklyn, and he was (and is) a great source of inspiration.

Poke around the site a bit to see what it has to offer. And please add your name to the National Leadership Fellows Group (just click on it in the Groups section, and then on the "Join" option). There are already a few conversations going there.

Post a comment on my page anytime if you have questions or ideas. And thanks again for taking the time to sign up!
