What did you learn in your high school years that made you who you are today?

I missed you today at lunch and had hoped to bend your ear for a few minutes. As a high schoolprincipal 4 years ago I had a troubling experience that continues to haunt me.
I had a student, model student, bright, fun, engaging, talented, and of the highest character. During her 9th grade year her mother passed away, her absent father moved in from Las Vegas to take over raising her. Dad is a card carrying, motorcycle riding, patch wearing Hells Angel. In fact he is a high ranking member. When he showed up at the school our Resource Deputy bristled and did a background check. As it turned out he was under indictment by a grand jury over beating another rival biker to death with a motorcycle helmet. he wanted to come to school for basketball games, his daughter was a member of the pep band. Our resource officer, and the sheriff's gang task force commander agreed, that dad wearing his colors at school at a predictable time, when the rival gang could confront him when he was on his own, created a potentially dangerous situation.
I asked dad if he could park his bike down the street and take off his colors when he came on campus. His response was that he would be in grave danger from his own club members if he did so, and that he couldn't do so.
It broke my heart, but I stuck to the recommendation. The ACLU rattled their saber at us for a time, but then dropped this isssue.
The girl graduated this spring and is heading off to college with a full ride scholarship courtesy of Bill and Melinda Gates, dad is currently serving 25 to life.
My continued distress comes from my stopping a father from participating in his daughters education at a time when she desperately need him to do so. I was unable to negotiate a "Common Ground". How could I have better navigated the issue?
best,

Is this teacher's guide readily available to teachers? By what route? (I didn't see it on Amazon but would like to suggest it as a teaching resource.)
Thanks again!
Cynthia
Thanks!
Thanks!
Sam Chaltain said you could help me figure out how to lay my hands on the history book of FA documents, using the Paideia method, the FAC published a few years back. Hoping you can help! (I'm interested for an article I'm working on for Journalism Education Today but also for a class I'm developing, tentatively entitled:"Communication Rights & Responsibilities: The Law & Ethics of the First Amendment".
Meanwhile, glad to see you on the network! Our local 6,000-circ daily runs you religiously (argh;sorry!) so I'm a big fan! I'm also a 2004 alum of the FAC's inaugural FA Institute for media advisers in Nashvegas. What a great week that was...
Thanks for any help you can provide!
Cynthia
