A draft Introduction of my forthcoming book, American Schools: The Art of Creating a Democratic Learning Community

(book comes out in October 2009)

Ask different people to define what it means to be an American in a single word, and you’ll hear the same answer – FREEDOM.

In that one word we capture the historic, partly fulfilled promise of the United States. And we name an irresistible, universal human impulse – to be in control of our own destiny, to feel visible to others, and to have a say in determining the shape of the world around us.

Alongside the need for freedom,… Continue

You're fast! Get a real job. And what, no "hey" to Francis? He's people too. So what do I need to do to get going here? Share stories about how I'm the teacher's union rabble-rouser in our district....? THAT'S a funny story...

The website is looking really good, Sam! It just needs a picture of Rufus. Charles is filling out his membership questionnaire as I write this. Glad to be part of your online group.

Thanks for the welcome! I take it the two children on your picture are your kids. They are so cute. How old? My own kids are 27 & almost 25, but I have 340 wonderful kids 5 days a week from age 3 through 6th grade.
I have my airfare booked and I am extremely excited to be part of this leadership fellows. I do have one question. How do I see who else has joined the National Leadership Fellows if they do not post a comment?

That is what I did, but the pictures end up behind the icon of the Leadership Fellows. I can see a bit of yours, Linda Carsten and mine. I know more are behind them, but I can't click on them. I have looked at the other profiles, but some of the members I take it are not in the Leadership Fellows, correct?

I'll finish the page today, with more personal insights. I haven't seen the link to join the Fellows Group yet.

An idea ~ will the students at large in the schools involved in the Fellowship be able to communiocate via this network?
