Hi Eileen,
I have a suggestion; while the series is not directly related to the 5 freedoms it teaches different points of view and includes many activities and options for students to critically think about an event, a situation, or a process from a…
Dick,
Thanks for sharing this information. The NNER conference is a perfect venue for the LODS work. In the area of nurturing pedagogy, as an example, the League schools have practices that can be of great help to others working to advance democrati…
Sam,
Thanks for the slides, they will be very useful and they will add to Dick's suggestion about the self study; they add the dimension of leadership needed for this work.
A program of the Institute of Educational Inquiry. We promote professional development focused on the growth of students successful members of a democratic society; and help preserve school advancement of Agenda for Education in a Democracy.
As executive director of a network (NNER) that works to embed democratic practices and ideals in schools and universities that prepare future educators, the Five Freedoms link is a wonderful example of advancing democracy through shared information and networking.
Ann, I'd like to suggest that you rephrase your quote: “Show me a successful school district, and I'll show you a community that wraps its arms around its schools, partnering with them for the success of all students.”
I think it should read: Show me the school district that embraces the full participation of its community, and I will show you a school district that is fully funded and adapting well to emerging challenges.
If schools could only be run by people with the ability to hear outside voices, I think we would have better schools. They complain that levy fails but I would be more surprised at passage than failure, given their inability to collaborate with the full community.
Welcome to the Five Freedoms Network, Ann! It's great to have you here -- how did you hear about us?
What great work you're involved in! I'd love any suggestions you might have for how Five Freedoms and the Network can contribute and/or add value to your mission.
We're partnering with The Forum for Education and Democracy on their Will We Really Campaign, launched on February 6, and hope you'll take a few minutes to visit the campaign web site: www.willwereally.org!
As you can see from the world map on our home page, we have a growing, eclectic community of individuals from across the globe -- from Brooklyn to Pakistan, from North Dakota to China. Thank you for taking the time to add your voice to that fascinating mix.
As you surf around the Network and its companion site, www.fivefreedoms.org, I urge you to share your voice throughout. Take our You Be The Judge First Amendment quiz (a new scenario every two weeks). Leave a comment on a fellow member's personal page and make a new contact. Upload a video to our gallery, or watch and react to one already there. Join (or start) a group or visit the Soapbox to contribute to (or start) a discussion. And invite others to join us.
In short, use your voice to co-create our online community :-)
Post a comment on my page anytime with questions or ideas. And please, the next time you're online, upload a photo to your personal profile -- the easiest way to make a virtual network feel more personal is by seeing each other's faces (and profile answers). Thanks again!
