The Five Freedoms Network

A recent question on the Wyoming Service-Learning Group asked if there are service-learning curriculums that can support current efforts to incorporate service-learning into programs or classes. Although the service and the learning are in a sense “the curriculum” because the service informs the learning and the learning informs the service, one possible curriculum is entitled Giraffe Heroes (http://www.giraffe.org/ed_ghp.html). This program is story-based and teaches compassionate courage and active citizenship. I would also recommend that you consider reading "The Complete Guide to Service-Learning" by Kathryn Berger Kaye. This text provides the basics of service-learning and also shows the linkages between service-learning and curriculum.

Thanks for including my book -- The Complete Guide to Service Learning -- as a resource. Also available is a new series of workbooks that guide teachers and students through a high quality cross-curricular service learning experience. Each has opportunities for youth to interact wtih substantial information on the theme, historical background, literature selection, interviews with experts, and a myriad of activities to lead students to design and implement projects through preparation, action, reflection, demonstration. Current books are: Hunger and Homelessness; Helping Others to Read and Succeed; and Protecting and Caring for Animals (available mid-August 2008). The next one A Kids Guide to Climate Change and Global Warming: How to Take Action! will be available January 2009. Also, my curriculum Strategies for Success with Literacy: A Learning Curriculum that Serves integrates literacy and social-emotional development with civic participation through service learning. Currently implemented in 7 states (Los Angeles Unified Schools has used this with over 45,000 students). If interested in any of the above, feel free to contact me at cbkaye@aol.com. Glad to be part of this dialogue!
