News Literacy Summer Institute (Applications Due April 1, 2009)

Dear Fellow Five Freedoms Project Members,

This is a great opportunity for educators in the Five Freedoms Network. The School of Journalism at Stony Brook University (located on the North Shore of Long Island, New York) is offering a "News Literacy" Summer Institute for high school teachers.

Information about the program is also available at this link:

I am attaching an application.

The News Literacy Program has a mission that fits very well with our goals as members of this network. The idea of the program is to engage students in becoming more informed consumers of the news. With the constant flow of information over television, the Internet and other media sources our students are confronted with a virtual tsunami of information, ideas and news sources. The News Literacy program has an innovative curriculum that empowers students to become "engaged" citizens. Teachers in this Summer Institute will be working on a curriculum that I believe will become a national model.

The staff and leadership at the News Literacy program has fully impressed me. I believe that the work they are doing will have broad national impact. This is something I strongly encourage my friends and colleagues in the Five Freedoms Network to consider applying for.

This is time sensitive. Applications are due April 1, 2009. I am passing this along because I truly believe that this is an outstanding program. I hope teachers in the network take advantage of this opportunity. Feel free to e-mail me at dascott801@aol.com if you wish to discuss my recommendation of this program. I am just a huge fan of their work and want to pass this opportunity along.

Thanks,

Dave Scott
